Looking forward, it seems we will still face some hard months ahead, with the increased Covid restrictions continuing to hurt cultural institutions at what might be their busiest period.
We can take comfort in knowing that our industry has always been able to bounce back stronger, as it did following the economic shocks a decade ago to become the UK’s fastest-growing and second-largest sector.
With uncertainly and job losses cutting through the cultural sector, just getting to the next quarter seems a challenge. But we also need to look to the future and consider how we will build back our industries – not just better, but fairer and more inclusive than ever before.
We’ve spoken many times about the poor recruitment practices our sector still needs to resolve and now is the chance – as we plan to rebuild – to future-proof the methods of how and who we recruit. We can take this opportunity to ensure that the cultural and creative sector needs to embrace the widest possible pool of available talent from across all the communities of the UK.
And help is at hand. We’ve joined up with cultural organisations across the UK to lead the bid for Creative Kickstart: a UK-wide job creation scheme to transform the lives of hundreds of young people.
We’re still awaiting an outcome from DWP, but if successful this will provide much-needed funding for the cultural sector, supporting the creation of hundreds of meaningful jobs for unemployed young people.
