Design Commission calls for new focus on education & skills

Creative & Cultural Skills welcomes the Design Commission’s first report, Restarting Britain: Design Education and Growth, an inquiry into design education at all levels, launched on 12th December.  Chaired by leading economist Vicky Pryce of FTI Consulting, the report posed four questions: Why does design matter? Where are we now with UK design education? What are our competitors doing? What must we do to compete?

Celebrating the life of Richard Pulford

The theatre industry has been celebrating the life of Richard Pulford, a previous Chief Executive of the Society of London Theatre, who passed away on Sunday 7th August following a long battle with illness.

Richard played a key role in the forming of Creative & Cultural Skills when CEO of the Society of London Theatre and the Theatrical Management Association, before he retired last year.

First meeting of Creative Industries Council

Creative & Cultural Skills welcomes the first meeting of the Creative Industries Council, the establishment of which was announced in the budget in March 2011. 

Chaired by Business Secretary Vince Cable and Creative Industries Minister Ed Vaizey, the Council includes members from across the creative and cultural sectors, including BPI, UK Music, the Design Council and NESTA.  Creative & Cultural Skills sits on the Council's skills working group.

Government encourages employers to recommend higher education courses

Creative & Cultural Skills welcomes the Government’s call for employers to become more involved in the design and quality assurance of higher education courses. Students at the Heart of the System, the new White Paper on Higher Education released on 28 June, also announces a review into how to make the UK the best place in the world for education-industry collaboration.

Supporting Growth: unveiling our future plans

Over 200 employers, and representatives from trade associations and education providers gathered at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London on Thursday 12th May to hear about our future plans for supporting growth in the creative and cultural industries.

Speakers included Baroness Garden, the Government's culture spokesperson in the House of Lords.

Technical Theatre employers come together to ensure skills needs are heard

Industry grouping Skillscene has published a statement of skills needs for people working in the technical theatre sector. Concerned by changes to investment in further and higher education, and determined to maintain the sector’s significant contribution to the UK’s thriving creative economy, the commercial and subsidised employers, unions, trade associations and practitioners that make up Skillscene have produced this important statement in order to influence, promote and support the provision and uptake of high quality and industry-relevant qualifications and training.

NSA backed by Arts Council England to support the future creative workforce

The National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural has been named as a key partner in the delivery of Arts Council England's new strategy, 'Achieving great art for everyone'. For three years from April 2012, the  Academy will receive funding from Arts Council England as part of the National Portfolio, announced on 30th March.

Cable launches new skills fund

Secretary of State for Business, Vince Cable, has launched a £50 million a year fund to help businesses develop the skills they need to drive growth. The Growth and Innovation Fund (GIF) will deliver targeted help for employer groups to overcome barriers to growth within their sectors and industries.  The funding could deliver new training to boost innovation and productivity, enable industries to set new professional standards, or support new or extended National Skills Academies. Cable said: “This government understands that to rebalance and grow our economy, we need to tackle the skills shortages that hold companies back. By putting the employer voice at the heart of the process, we will reward inventive approaches to training that deliver real help to get business moving.”

Music Blueprint calls for more industry-led training to keep the UK ahead

The last in our series of Blueprints, our reports which analyse the skills needs of the industries we represent, was launched on 1st March at the National Skills Academy's annual conference in Bournemouth.

The Music Blueprint provides the evidence to back up industry calls for real investment in training, identifying specific areas where action is needed.
