What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a programme of on-the-job training which includes a nationally recognised qualification.
Some key facts about apprenticeships:
- Apprenticeships are targeted at and publically funded for young people (ages 18-24) who are not graduates; candidates who do not meet these criteria would need to find alternative funding
- The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage is currently £2.60 per hour (since 1st October 2011)
- Apprentices must be employed for the length of time that it takes to complete all qualifications within the relevant framework
- Apprenticeships are available at Levels 2 and 3 currently and many apprentices progress from one to the next
- Apprenticeships in the creative and cultural sectors may become available at Level 4 and above in the near future
- Apprenticeships are not only for new entrants; exisiting staff within a workplace may also consider an apprenticeship
