What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a programme of on-the-job training which includes a nationally recognised qualification.

Some key facts about apprenticeships:

  • Apprenticeships are targeted at and publically funded for young people (ages 18-24) who are not graduates; candidates who do not meet these criteria would need to find alternative funding
  • The Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage is currently £2.60 per hour (since 1st October 2011)
  • Apprentices must be employed for the length of time that it takes to complete all qualifications within the relevant framework
  • Apprenticeships are available at Levels 2 and 3 currently and many apprentices progress from one to the next
  • Apprenticeships in the creative and cultural sectors may become available at Level 4 and above in the near future
  • Apprenticeships are not only for new entrants; exisiting staff within a workplace may also consider an apprenticeship
